(30.5 x 22.9 cm) Windsor, Royal Library 19102r In this beautiful main drawing from a series of embryo studies, Leonardo displays "the great mystery" of the womb, revealing its secrets as if peeling away the outer layers of a seed. He records that he studied a fetus "almost four months old," but inaccuracies exist: the details of the womb and the placenta are based on the dissection of a cow. To the right, in a small sketch, he depicts the fetus developing and floating in amniotic waters, just as, in Leonardo's thought, the earth grew out of its surrounding seas. Z10
